How to Get Clear Skin for Men: The Routine and the Ingredients That Matter

by Tanner Johnston

Most men want clear skin, they just don’t know where to start. That's why I spent years working with world-class chemists and dermatologists to develop REYAL. We tested every formula over and over with focus groups of men, from those who had never used skincare before to those who wanted better skin but found the category confusing and overwhelming.

That same level of care doesn't stop once a product launches. It goes into every batch we make. In fact, I still personally test every batch before it leaves our facility to make sure it meets the standard we set from day one.

Clear skin comes down to consistency. Here is how to get there.

Why men break out in the first place

A breakout usually starts with a clogged pore. Oil, sweat, and dead skin build up, bacteria move in, and the pore gets inflamed. Simple as that. What is less simple is that men deal with a few triggers that make it worse.

Men produce more oil, because more active oil glands come with the territory. We also sweat more, and that sweat sits on the skin after a workout and sinks into the pores and brings dirt and bacteria with it. Now, add shaving, which drags a blade across your face every few days, and you have a recipe for irritation and clogged pores.  I've always been a guy with very oily skin who sweats a lot, so I know firsthand how frustrating it can be. That's what pushed me to spend years working alongside world-class chemists and dermatologists to understand what actually works, and to build products that solve those problems without overcomplicating skincare.

Stress, poor sleep, and a rough diet do not help either. Keeping your pores clear and calm is enough to handle most of it, and a simple daily routine does most of that work.

The routine for clearer skin

Three steps, morning and night, plus sunscreen in the daytime.

  1. Wash with a gentle face wash. Twice a day, and always after you train. It clears the sweat, oil, and grime that clog pores before they turn into breakouts. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing daily and after every workout. Leave the bar soap alone, because it strips your skin and triggers more oil.
  2. Treat with a serum. Ours carries Vitamin C to brighten and even your tone, which is what fades the dark marks old breakouts leave behind, plus Hyaluronic Acid to keep the skin hydrated while it works.
  3. Moisturize with a lightweight moisturizer. A hydrated barrier is a calmer barrier, and calm skin breaks out less. Even oily, acne-prone skin needs it, so look for the word non-comedogenic, which means it will not clog your pores. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends moisturizing daily.

In the morning, finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Sun makes the dark marks from old breakouts darker and slower to fade, and men carry a higher risk of skin cancer as they age, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. You can run all three steps together as the Essential Skincare Kit.

Exfoliation, and how often

Our Face Wash includes micro-exfoliants. These active ingredients clear the dead skin cells that clogs pores. Most men won’t need an additional separate step for exfoliation, as our face wash does the heavy lifting.

The bumps along your jaw are usually the razor

A lot of what men think is acne along the jaw and neck comes from shaving and ingrown hairs. Use a sharp blade, a real shave gel, and go with the grain. A dull blade tugs and irritates the skin into breaking out. Shave after you wash, when your skin is soft, and hydrate afterward. If a spot is already active, work around it so you are not dragging the razor over it.

Read the label, because this is where clear skin is won

Here is the part nobody tells you. Sometimes the thing holding your skin back is the product itself. Customers need to read the ingredient list and make sure every ingredient has a purpose.  For example, we use Dragon's Blood to calm inflammation and Tiger Grass to soothe and support the barrier. Hyaluronic Acid holds moisture.

Pay attention to what is missing too. Heavy fragrance and harsh detergents are common triggers for breakouts and irritation, so a shorter, cleaner list is often the better one.

The daily habits that clear skin faster

The routine does the heavy lifting, and a few habits speed it up.

Wash after every workout, because trapped sweat is a pore-clogger most men ignore. Keep your hands off your face, and stop picking, because picking turns a spot into a scar. Change your pillowcase every week and wipe down your phone, since both collect oil and bacteria you press into your skin. Turn the shower temperature down, because hot water irritates and dries the skin. And give it time, because a few weeks of consistency beats a cabinet of half-used products.

Clearing body acne on your back, chest, and shoulders

Breakouts are a below-the-neck problem for a lot of men. Sweat, friction from gear, and tight synthetic shirts trap oil and bacteria against your back, chest, and shoulders, and that clogs pores the same way it does on your face. The fix is the same idea: do not let sweat sit. Shower soon after you train, use a body wash on the areas that break out, and change out of a sweaty shirt instead of sitting in it. Loose, breathable fabric helps, and so does a clean towel. If body acne is deep, painful, or scarring, a dermatologist can help.

What to expect, week by week

Clear skin is a slow build, and knowing the timeline keeps you from quitting early. In the first week or two, your skin looks cleaner, feels more hydrated, and the surface calms down. Around weeks three and four, active breakouts start to slow if you have stayed consistent. By eight to twelve weeks, your tone evens out and the dark marks from old breakouts begin to fade. The men who get clear skin are the ones who run the same simple routine every day and let it work, even on the days their skin already looks fine.

Why simple wins

I built REYAL around a three-step, ninety-second routine because the routine you keep is the one that works. A ten-step regimen looks impressive but usually gets abandoned by week two. If you are starting out, our men's skincare range is built to be exactly that simple, and you can add to it once the basics are a habit.

FAQ

How long does it take to get clear skin? A few weeks of consistent daily care. Hydration and a cleaner look show up in days, while tone and texture take longer.

What is the fastest way to clear skin for men? There is no overnight fix. The fastest real path is a simple routine done every day, plus keeping your hands off your face.

Does what I eat affect my skin? For some men it does, though it varies. Steady sleep and a consistent routine move the needle more reliably for most people.

Why do I keep breaking out along my jaw and neck? Usually it is shaving irritation and ingrown hairs showing up as bumps. Fix your shave technique first.

Should I pop a pimple? No. Popping pushes bacteria deeper and often leaves a scar. Keep the area clean and let it settle.

Does sunscreen help with acne scars? Yes, indirectly. Sun makes dark marks darker and slower to fade, so a daily SPF helps old spots heal faster.

Can shaving cause acne? It can. A dull blade and shaving against the grain irritate the skin and cause ingrown hairs that look like acne. Shave with a sharp blade, with the grain, on soft skin.

Do I need to see a dermatologist? For persistent or severe acne, yes. A good daily routine handles most everyday clarity.

Key takeaways

  • A breakout is a clogged pore, so the goal is keeping pores clear and calm.

  • The core routine is wash, treat, moisturize, morning and night, with sunscreen in the day.

  • Never skip moisturizer, even on oily or acne-prone skin.

  • Read the ingredient list, and give any routine a few weeks before you judge it.

  • Most jaw and neck bumps are shaving irritation, so fix your shave first.
